Without the support of the Human Rights Campaign so much of the “Resistance” against anti-LGBTQ bills and legislation in the 2017 85th Legislative session would not have been possible. Because of so many member donations HRC was able to send a great support team to Texas with our Texas Field Manager David Topping , Austin Field Representative Sissi Yado and Steve Alcocer Austin Volunteer Organizer much of the organization across the state would not have been possible. Without the help of HRC and other organizations including Equality Texas, Texas Freedom Network and so many others we would not have been able to deliver 50,000 messages of support for our LGBTQ family and voice our disgust for anti-transgender bathroom bills.
HRC also sent Field Representatives to Houston, San Antonio and Dallas. Without the donations from supporters like you and all the others that support the LGBTQ Community we would not have been able to defeat over 30 anti-LGBTQ bills this past session. As of right now it looks like we have blocked any Anti-Transgender bathroom bill from creating more discrimination and hate crimes from taking place. This is so important not only for the adult transgender members of our community but also for the protection of all the elementary through high school students in Texas. Because of HRC Austin my husband and I have made so many wonderful new friends who we will stay in touch with for years to come. Not only the staffers from HRC but also fellow volunteers who joined in and supported in so many aspects of our fight this session. Although we have to wait until midnight Wednesday, Aug. 16th I have faith that a bathroom bill will not pass this session and the people of Texas will still speak out against what TX Speaker of the House Rep. Straus of San Antonio called a “Solution looking for a Problem”.
Be sure to come by the HRC booth at Austin Pride 2017 between 11:00 and 1:30 August 26th and meet myself, my husband and all of the other wonderful HRC staffers, HRC members and volunteers that have been part of the Texas Resistance together this year. The booth will be open from 11:00 until 6:00 p.m. And, while you’re there join HRC and get a special gift with your membership!
